Buffalo Bills

Believe it or not, at 6-5 the Bills are still in the AFC playoff hunt. The team hasn’t reached the postseason this century and should be willing to do anything it takes to make this year different. Buffalo has made its money on defense this season, and boasts the league’s fourth-ranked unit (312.2 yards per game). But offensively the Bills are a bit of a mess right now.

Kyle Orton has taken over for EJ Manuel at quarterback and has at least provided a spark for the offense, but the unit ranks 24th in total yards league-wide at just 322.9 yards per game. Buffalo also has the NFL’s 22nd-ranked rushing attack, averaging 97.5 yards per game. Something has to change if the Bills want to stay in the Wild Card hunt.

C.J. Spiller is likely out for the year with a broken collarbone, the 33-year-old Fred Jackson has seen better days and Anthony Dixon isn’t exactly a name that will strike fear in the heart of opposing defenses. With Spiller gone, the Bills need a back who can be a multidimensional threat. Rice could be that guy.

For the remainder of the season, opposing defenses know what they will get when they face the Bills offense as currently constructed. Orton is going to drop back and fire passes as hard as he can to Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods. He needs an outlet out of the backfield to take some pressure off his young wideouts and it wouldn’t hurt to have a running back who could chew up yards. Jackson and Dixon aren’t going to be able to do either of those things, which is why Rice is a fit in Buffalo.
