Loser: Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns aren’t out of the playoff hunt by any means, but they just made life a lot harder for themselves.

Really good teams win games they are supposed to win, but that hasn’t been the case for the Browns far too often this season. Not only did they lose to a Buffalo Bills team they shouldn’t have, this isn’t the first time.

Dropping games to both Houston and Jacksonville were bad beats as well and with Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Carolina and Baltimore on the slate to finish the season, the path to the playoffs are not clear at all.

On top of that, they managed to start a quarterback kerfuffle where there wasn’t one.

A month ago I felt that changing to Johnny Manziel was the right move. It was the right move because Brian Hoyer hadn’t impressed me overall and I felt that having a guy who kind of does just enough to keep you in games wasn’t enough to make the playoffs.

Changing quarterbacks now is a high stakes poker move and one I wouldn’t do. Yes, Hoyer had thrown interceptions six times in the last three games while only throwing one touchdown during that span, but we’re too close to the playoffs. Manziel might end up being a fantastic quarterback for the Browns, but he’s a rookie with raw game—he’s going to make mistakes. Four weeks ago the Browns had the time to adjust if Manziel imploded.

Now it could cost them the season.

Sometimes it’s not just making the right move—it’s making the right move at the right time.
