Loser: Tom Coughlin and Jerry Reese

This has been a conversation for over a year, but it’s heating up again as the Giants collapsed against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Let’s write that again: the Giants squandered a 21 point lead to lose to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

No offense to the Jaguars, but that’s ridiculous. And ultimately, the blame for the problems come down on the shoulders of head coach Tom Coughlin and GM Jerry Reese.

Coughlin because while he has two Super Bowl rings, he has missed the playoffs more often than he has made it into them. Coughlin because there is no way a team should choke away leads like the Giants did this weekend, and the blame for that always ends with the head coach. Coughlin because he was almost out the door last season.

Let’s not forget Reese though, because his efforts in the NFL draft have been abyssal. As ESPN’s Dan Graziano wrote last May, Reese is no genius. Given how bad this draft has performed outside of Odell Beckham Jr., I’m sure Graziano might even have more to say.  He gave Reese a pass on the 2012 draft, but at this point we can call it a bust.

Reese has ignored the offensive line, missed in his evaluation of many skill-position picks and has only been good in spurts when fixing things via free agency. I heard several reporters and team officials talk about how the ownership loves Reese, and how he wouldn’t be going anywhere, but that was during the summer when things looked hopeful.

At the point, the bloom may be off the rose.
