Arizona Cardinals Place RB Andre Ellington on IR
By Keith Myers
The NFL‘s Arizona Cardinals place RB Andre Ellington on injured reserve with a sports hernia, ending his season.
Andre Ellington’s season is over. The Arizona Cardinals have placed him on injured reserve because of a sports hernia.
This move wasn’t entirely unexpected. Ellington missed Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs after missing the entire week of practice. Head coach Bruce Arians had mentioned that IR was a possibility.
Ellington leads the Cardinals with 660 rushing yards and three touchdowns in what has been a difficult and injury-riddled season for the running back. Ellington played through a painful foot injury earlier in the season as well.
Injuries have been a major problem for Arizona in recent weeks as the team is now fighting to hold on to their division lead over the Seattle Seahawks. Quarterback Carson Palmer and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald are both injured, as are numerous players on the defense.
To fill his roster spot, the Cardinals have signed veteran and long-time Miami Dolphins safety Chris Clemons.
The Cardinals have a brutal remaining schedule as well. They face a red-hot St. Louis Rams team and the Seahawks, before finishing up on the road against the San Francisco 49ers. In an effort to survive that and get into the playoffs, they will have to rely heavily on a committee of backup running backs that lack NFL experience.
