Iowa has a long tradition of outstanding linemen and Brandon Scherff continued that as the Outland Trophy winner as the nation’s top interior lineman.

Brandon Scherff has been an anchor at left tackle for Iowa for the last three seasons and he joined a group of Hawkeyes legends Thursday night when he was named the Outland Trophy winner at the nation’s top interior linemen.

Scherff, a 6-foot-5, 320-pounder from Denison, Iowa, is a former high school quarterback and tennis player who sort of grew out of those pastimes.

He was named the Big Ten’s top lineman and is a two-time first-team All-Big Ten performer, opting to return to Iowa instead of going into the NFL Draft after his junior year despite a first-round grade.

Scherff is the fourth Hawkeye to win the Outland, joining Cal Jones in 1955, Alex Karras in 1957 and Robert Gallery in 2003.

Iowa will play Tennessee in the Taxslayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla., on Jan. 2.

The other finalists for the award were Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown and Auburn center Reese Dismukes.

The Outland Trophy is named for John Outland, an All-American at two positions for Penn in the late 19th century and is presented by the Football Writers Association of America.

Pitt defensive tackle Aaron Donald was last year’s winner.
