Sean Payton is planning on staying put.
The New Orleans Saints coach was emphatic in denying the veracity of rumors he’ll leave the team after the 2014 NFL season.
As Payton made clear he was aware of, the rumors of the coach possibly leaving were started by Peter King in a video on his website, the MMQB.com.
From The Advocate:
"“This is his ninth year,” King said. “A lot of times a coach gets to be in his ninth, tenth, eleventh year in a place and he starts to feel a little wanderlust, he starts to feel ‘are they still listening to my voice, are they still getting my message.’”King then notes that Payton’s mentor, Bill Parcells, often tried to leave situations before they became sour.“I wonder if Sean Payton is going to get that wanderlust and try to go somewhere at the end of this unsuccessful Saints’ season,” he said."
The Saints have undoubtedly been a disappointment, winning just five of their first 13 games. But it would be a stunner to see Payton leave, especially in light of his recent comments.
One doesn’t often see a coach leave a team in which he has a star quarterback, like Payton has with Drew Brees.
Also, as poorly as the Saints have played this year, they are still tied for first place in the NFC South and have a good shot at going to the playoffs, making a Payton exit even less likely.
Regardless, it was a smart move by Payton to shoot these rumors down before they continued to grow.
