Why Would They Want Rondo: It’s obvious why they Lakers want Rondo as they need a superstar to take over for Kobe when he retires after next season. That being said, Kobe paired with Rondo this season is a thing of beauty for the Lakers and may even will them out of the funk they’re in. They can still make the playoffs at this point and adding Rondo, Kobe and Julius Randle –even though he’s out this season — for the future is wildly attractive.

Can They Afford Him: A big sell would be the expiring contract of Steve Nash. He’s not going to be playing this year, but the Lakers can effectively use him as a trade exception that the Celtics can then use as free money when his deal expires and he retires at the end of the season. That basically gives Boston $10 million in cap space to go out and sign a free agent, with Jeremy Lin stepping into the starting point guard role. This isn’t as unattractive a deal as it may seem and both teams win big here if this trade happen.

Will They Pull Off A Trade: It’s not as unattractive a deal as some may think, but stacked up against the other offers it’s still not the best one. Phoenix can offer the most and this deal comes down to if the Celtics like the Lakers or Knicks offer better. This is a deal structured around future money, not talent and that all depends on the Celtic’s taste at the moment.
