Chicago Bears: Who Will Start At Quarterback in 2015?
Mark Sanchez
Sanchez hasn’t been great for the Philadelphia Eagles, but he has certainly rehabbed his value around the league a bit during his relief stint for Nick Foles this season. In seven games, Sanchez has completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 1,752 yards, with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His quarterback rating of 84.5 would be a career-high and considering he’s in his first year in a new system, that’s not terrible. And to be fair, at times he has actually looked really good for the Eagles.
The 28-year-old USC product never had a chance in New York. The Jets surrounded him with subpar talent and expected him to make gold out of it. He had offensive linemen who couldn’t block, running backs who couldn’t get past the line of scrimmage and receivers who couldn’t catch or create separation from defenders. It was a no-win scenario. With the Eagles he has shown that he can compete in the NFL, though he may never develop into the franchise quarterback his raw tools suggest he could be.
Sanchez will be a free agent after the season and the Bears could likely get him on a multiyear deal if they keep the guaranteed money low and gave themselves an out after the first season. That would give Sanchez a year to prove himself and earn the next year of his contract. He would almost certainly jump at a real chance to start for an NFL team.
Sanchez isn’t a long-term solution at this point, but if you’re starting from scratch you could do worse than a relatively young guy who has four-plus years of starting experience. Sanchez has never been surrounded with the kind of weapons the Bears already possess and he could thrive in the right system.
