Max Scherzer remains the biggest target in MLB Free Agency, but it is sounding more and more likely that the ace starting pitcher will end up back with the Detroit Tigers.

Somebody is going to give Max Scherzer a long-term, mega-contract this off-season. With such an active off-season and with so many teams willing to be aggressive to get better, one would assume that the market for Scherzer is going to heat up.

That hasn’t happened, at least not yet, and increasingly it sounds like a reunion with Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers is more likely. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe explains:

"The more you ask baseball executives about where Scherzer will end up, the more the answers come back Detroit. The Tigers know and like Scherzer, and the feeling is they need him after trading Rick Porcello to the Red Sox, and obtaining Alfredo Simon from the Reds and Shane Greene from the Yankees. The Tigers’ rotation is missing a significant pitcher (you can’t call Justin Verlander that anymore, and David Price may not re-sign)."

What must also be accounted for here is the mindset of Tigers’ owner Mike Ilitch. He notoriously wants to see a Tigers’ World Series victory, which has explained the hyper-aggressive approach of the team the last few seasons. Increasingly, the approach has been to hand out the long-term deal to win now and figure out the rest later.

Especially with Verlander’s struggles in 2014 and the uncertainty around Price, it starts to make a lot of sense that Max Scherzer could end up back with the Tigers, even if they will have to stretch financially to make the money work.

Last year Scherzer went 18-5 in 33 starts with a 3.15 ERA and a strikeout rate of 10.3 K/9.
