5. John Wall

The Washington Wizards took a step forward last year with their first round playoff win against the Bulls. A big reason for that was the big step John Wall took in his development. Yes, I know there were other players, but he was the epitome of what a point guard should be –he distributed when he had to, he made the right decisions on when to shoot and what to shoot. When he saw an opening, he took the ball to the basket. When he saw the defense plug the middle, he pulled up for a jumper. Whenever the Bulls made their customary run after falling behind, Wall would be there to stop it. He was masterful in that series.

Wall was also masterful during the regular season. He developed a three-point shot. I would not say he is an accomplished three-point shooter, but with 29 percent, 26 percent and even a 7 percent (no, that is not a typo), shooting 35 percent was a big jump. He found his teammates a lot, finishing tied for second in the NBA in assists. He was eighth in the league in steals per game, and was fifth among point guards in scoring.

This season has been much of the same. His Wizards team is the third seed in the Eastern Conference. After a PER of 19.5 last season, he stands at 20.9 this season. His Box Plus/Minus was 2.6 last season, and this season it stands at 4.1. He has career highs in shooting percentage (45.6 percent), rebounds (4.6), assists (10.4, also leading the league), and steals (2.2).

While people keep harping on Chicago or Cleveland as favorites in the East, Wall is trying to add his Wizards into the mix.
