The Philadelphia 76ers gave Jason Richardson a pack of adult diapers for his 34th birthday.

The 76ers are the second youngest team in the NBA this year and sport six players who are 21 or younger on their current roster. So when Richardson turned 34 his teammates decided it would be funny to set him up with the perfect gag gift.

The 76ers are plugging right along and scraping the bottom of the barrel with an 8-33 record and only two worse teams in all of basketball. I guess it is good to have fun but with this prank I am reminded of Brad Pitt in the movie “Moneyball” where he reminds his team what losing is supposed to sound like.

Of course maybe this is totally legit, I mean Richardson has not seen the court in almost two full years and last played in a game on January 18, 2013. Richardson underwent knee surgery back in February of 2013 and claims that he is planning his return to the team sometime this January. What kind of role and impact Richardson will have with the struggling 76ers remains to be seen, but I don’t see how he could hurt the team. He could however hurt the development of some of the young project players on the team by using up their minutes.

I can only imagine that if Richardson is not dealt to a contending team he will be looked upon to provide a leadership role in the locker room and assist and help with the extremely young team that the 76ers are trying to turn into a group of legitimate basketball players.

Some of the young guns on the team have proven already to show some serious promise including Michael Carter-Williams, Nerlens Noel and Robert Covington. The 76ers have yet to really find a promising shooting guard so the minutes should be there for the aging Richardson assuming his body can hold up to the pounding that the NBA season puts on players.

When Richardson was asked if he thought the gift by his much younger teammates was funny he could only respond with a one word answer, “Depends…”

Okay, maybe he didn’t really say that, but you have to admit that if he did, it would be funny.
