The Fantastic Four were never my thing. I was aware of them and knew enough to enjoy them, but I was never one to read all the comics and keep up to date with the storylines. This was probably due to being a child of the 80’s and being more interested in X-Men. Still; Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing were pretty awesome. Add Dr. Doom and things really get interesting.

So despite my lack of real interest in The Fantastic Four, I was still excited to see the original (2005) Fantastic Four movie. Let’s face it though; this was not a good movie. It had moments and the casting was pretty good, but overall this was a disappointment. Especially compared to X-Men and Spider-Man. The film was successful enough to spawn a sequel; Rise of the Silver Surfer, but this too was terrible.

That’s why in August of 2009 when Fox announced a reboot of the franchise. I dismissed it. I didn’t think there would be anywhere they could take the franchise that would make it seem interesting again. Then some casting started coming out. Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, and Jamie Bell as The Thing. This seemed promising. They added Toby Kebbell as Dr. Doom which is a pretty solid casting. Kebbel has been in some good films and was great in Black Mirror.

Fox released the trailer today and it looks like it could turn things around. It has the benefit of being co-produced with Marvel at the height of the studios confidence. Perhaps this will be the Fantastic Four film we should have gotten back in 2005.

The Fantastic Four is set to be released August 7, 2015.
