Paramount Pictures announced this morning that they have elected to move the release date of the upcoming action-packed adventure from its original Christmas Day release to July 31st. This is just over five months ahead of schedule.

Under normal circumstances, it would seem odd for a studio like Paramount to give up a date on such a profitable day as Christmas Day, but it seems as if Paramount already had a plan in mind. In place of Mission: Impossible 5 on Christmas Day, Paramount will be releasing the animated adventure Monster Trucks.

Also being released on Christmas Day this year is the fourth installment in the Alvin and the Chipmunks series; which is actually being released on December 23rd to capitalize on the holiday traffic.

This will be joined by Joy starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. As most of you know by now, Bradley Cooper has received a lot of praise for his portrayal of US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in American Sniper. Jennifer Lawrence will be playing the role of Katniss Everdeen one last time this year with the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 this November.

Last, but not least, Mission: Impossible 5 leaves behind a film by the name of The Revenant. Some of you have heard this title before and may not be able to put their finger on why. Fans of the DC Universe will know this one as the film that forced actor Tom Hardy to drop out of the upcoming Suicide Squad film due to a need for additional filming on The Revenant.

Mission: Impossible 5 will have a little more competition on its new date. The Tom Cruise starrer will now go head-to-head with Warner Bros.Point Break remake starring Luke Bracey as Johnny Utah; the role that Keanu Reeves made famous in the 1991 original.

Also bring released on July 31st is the sci-fi thriller Self/Less starring Ryan Reynolds. This will be joined by the Antoine Fuqua directed drama Southpaw. Sons of Anarchy fans will be interested to know that the screenplay for the film was written by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter.

Mission: Impossible 5 certainly has a lot more competition in its new date, but given the track record of the film franchise, we don’t think they have anything to worry about. The franchise has made over $739.8 million domestically and a whopping $1.36 billion overseas for a worldwide gross of almost $2.1 billion.

As of this moment, the specific details about the plot of the fifth installment have been kept under pretty tight lock and key, but one would assume that as we approach the release date of the film that a little more information will be made readily available.

Mission: Impossible 5 is scheduled to be released on July 31, 2015.
