8) Phil Simms, New York Giants, Super Bowl XXI

Younger fans likely know Simms only as the lead analyst for CBS, but the former Giants quarterback had a storybook day in the Super Bowl. On January 25, 1987, Simms led New York to a dominant, 39-20 victory, and he basically had the game of his life.

Simms connected on 22 of 25 passes (for a Super Bowl record 88% completion rate) to account for 268 yards and 3 touchdowns. The yardage total leaves something to be desired when compared to the more modern production, but completing 88% of your passes against air isn’t a given, and Simms managed to complete that task in the Super Bowl.

For an indication of just how good he was in this spot, Phil Simms still holds the Super Bowl mark for quarterback rating at 150.9, and whatever you think of that statistic, it is impressive. For the most part, Simms wasn’t the standout player that many on this list proved to be, but he was near-perfect in a Super Bowl.
