Super Bowl 49: Ranking the most dramatic finishes
By Will Osgood
- Super Bowl V: Baltimore Colts 16, Dallas Cowboys 13
Super Bowl V reined in a few firsts. It was the first to be played on artificial turf. It was also the first feature a defensive player as game MVP—it was the Cowboys’ Chuck Howley with two interceptions in the game. Thus it was also the first game to feature an MVP from the losing team.
But perhaps more important than any of those milestones was the fact that it was also the first Super Bowl which truly came down to the wire. The game was tied 13-13 with five seconds when a rookie kicker for the Colts named Jim O’Brien neglected the pressure of the moment and successfully placed his 32-yard field goal between the uprights to give the Colts a dramatic championship victory.
It still stands as one of only two “walkoff” field goals in Super Bowl history.
It is also featured one of the crazier plays in Super Bowl history, the John Mackey tipped touchdown reception from 75 yards out, tying the game up at 6-6. O’Brien’s extra point attempt was blocked. It was not the only Colts’ touchdown, though, as running back Tom Nowatzke scored a touchdown from two yards out with 7:35 to go in the game to tie the score at 13.
