Did anyone see this coming? Sony Online Entertainment, creators of Everquest, DC Universe Online, the Planetside Series, the recently released H1V1 and a host of other quality titles has been sold by Sony to an investment firm Columbus Nova.

What does this mean?

John Smedley, president of Daybreak Game Company makes a statement:

"“We are excited to join Columbus Nova’s impressive roster of companies. They have a proven track record in similar and related industries and we are eager to move forward to see how we can push the boundaries of online gaming. We will continue to focus on delivering exceptional games to players around the world, as well as bringing our portfolio to new platforms, fully embracing the multi-platform world in which we all live.”"

So let’s not get hung up on the sadness that comes from seeing a great internal developer leave the nest, and think about these following points:

  • This might mean Planetside 2 will come to Xbox One
  • H1Z1 on Xbox One?
  • Cross Platform gaming in their MMO worlds?

More air was cleared via a post on the H1Z1 Reddit from Smedley:

"“So what exactly does this mean for you? It will be business as usual and all SOE games will continue on their current path of development and operation. In fact, we expect to have even more resources available to us as a result of this acquisition. It also means new exciting developments for our existing IP and games as we can now fully embrace the multi-platform world we are living in.”"

This is obviously huge news, and great news for the gaming industry. Planetside 2 is one of the most refreshing shooters out there, and SOE, er, Daybreak Games’ philosophy on open world gaming was a refreshing take on the in-the-box shooters and MMOs that litter the gaming landscape.

This could be a great thing for everyone.
