5. New York Jets: Todd Bowles

Grade: C+

I think Todd Bowles is a great football coach, but I don’t see how he makes the Jets that much better.

Bowles did a wonderful job the past two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, and he was voted the NFL’s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014. There’s no doubt Bowles deserves a shot as a head coach, but I’m skeptical if New York is the right spot for him.

The Jets just had a defensive-minded coach in Rex Ryan for the last six seasons and their offense suffered because of it. Over the last three seasons, the Jets have ranked in the bottom-five in points per game every season.

A great offensive head coach seems like the direction the Jets should have gone with coaching search.

For his offensive coordinator, Bowles will look to Chan Gailey to figure out the fifth-worst scoring offense in the NFL.

Gailey has been out of the league for two seasons, but his last coaching stint was in Buffalo from 2010-2012. Gailey ran the spread offense during his time with the Bills.

If Gailey runs the spread offense with the Jets, Geno Smith might actually be a decent fit. As you know, Smith excelled in the spread offense while he was the quarterback at West Virginia.

While Bowles and Gailey might work out, the Patriots, Bills, and Dolphins have much more talented teams, and it’s going to be at least a few years before the Jets are even competitive in the division again.
