Kurt Sutter reveals information about new show, The Bastard Executioner

Sons of Anarchy wrapped up its 7th and last season at the tail end of 2014. Sutter, who had a small role as Otto, the imprisoned motorcycle gang member, created a unique, albeit sometimes campy, world in which drama and violence go hand in hand with a California-based motorcycle gang–The Sons of Anarchy. The show was massively popular, and was the face of FX’s programming for its entire run.

Fast forward to now, and Sutter is vamping up to film his new show, The Bastard Executioner, sometime in March.

A synopsis for the upcoming show reads:

"Set in the early 14th century, a knight in King Edward III’s army is broken by the horrors of war and vows to lay down his weapon. But when that violence finds him again, he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all, that of an executioner’s sword."

According to Rolling Stone, the president of FX stated, “Ultimately, just like Sons of Anarchy, it’s got a very strong Shakespearean journey in the center of it.” This is in reference to a lot of observations made about SoA and how it relates to Shakespeare’s stories–primarily Hamlet.

An article on Bustle compares characters in SoA to Hamlet characters, and sums up the comparisons by saying, “Anyone who’s the least bit familiar with this classic Shakespearean drama knows that it’s full of lies, betrayal, and bloodshed — otherwise known as the three key ingredients to any SoA episode.”

Little is known about The Bastard Executioner, the actor for the leading role isn’t public knowledge, despite it being a short time until filming starts. Sources indicate that Katey Segal, Sutter’s wife in real life, will have a large role. Segal portrayed Gemma Teller, the lead character’s mother, in SoA.

The Bastard Executioner will film in Wales in the United Kingdom, and will star a mostly British cast.

Kurt Sutter posted some pictures in Wales of locations that he was scouting for filming. It certainly looks like he’ll be replacing bars and clubhouses for castles and green pastures:
