7. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts

Seventh seems far too low for Luck, especially after I wrote this glowing article about him prior to the AFC Championship Game. Yet this list proves something so wonderful for the NFL: the quarterback position is stacked.

We have the benefit of including the playoffs for our purposes, and as a result, though Luck was overall equal if not better than Tom Brady during the regular season, he certainly didn’t match the now four-time Super Bowl quarterback’s performance in January. As we’ve already noted previously, Luck was the victim of a receiving corps with the worst cumulative hands perhaps in NFL history.

And he still managed to throw for nearly 4,800 yards (or 300 per game), coming up short by 39 yards. For my money, Luck was the second most valuable player to any team this season. Without Luck, the Colts may have won 7-8 games, assuming his replacement was average (football really needs a WAR or VORP stat). Part of the allure with Luck is his tremendous athleticism, which he used to rush for 273 yards and three touchdowns this past year.

Luck will almost certainly be ranked higher if we do this list again next year. But for 2014, he was the seventh best quarterback. That’s despite him leading the league with 40 touchdown passes.
