Deron Williams to the Bulls

Speaking of clearing house and rebuilding. Where does the Net’s aging point guard fit in?

Dare I say the Chicago Bulls could be a potential candidate for Deron Williams.

“Wait a minute. They already have Derrick Rose to play point guard… Unless he injured his knee again and I didn’t hear about it?”

I can hear Chicago Bulls fans screaming this at me all the way from the Mad House on Madison. Please suspend your point guard depth chart issues for just one second while we consider what the Bulls have to offer.

If you look at the Bulls roster they may need to get rid of Taj Gibson after the season is over. Playing as a backup to Pau Gasol probably doesn’t seem right for one of the league’s premier post defenders. And with Mirotic being a fully functional option at the power forward position in the future, we will start hearing Gibson’s name in potential trade deals more and more as his career with Bulls continues.

If the Bulls would pair Gibson with Kirk Hinrich or Aaron Brooks and a draft pick they could realistically make the deal work.

Now let’s talk about those depth chart issues everyone and their brother in Chicago was yelling at me about.

If you take a time machine all the way back to 2005 and you travel to a small college town called Champaign you will see a quick little point guard who slashes to the basket (kind of like Derrick Rose does huh?) as well as anyone did in college basketball for the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Is it Deron Williams you ask? No! It was no other than Dee Brown, the NBA bust who has been bouncing around in overseas pro-ball ever since.

Deron Williams played alongside Brown in the Illinois starting lineup which led to the best record in Illinois history at 37-2. The Illini’s up-tempo offense was a marvel to watch. Williams had no problem playing the shooting guard roll averaging 12.5 points and 6.8 assists.

Williams played the two-guard position beautifully in college and there is no reason to think that it won’t work at the NBA level next to Derrick Rose. Especially with a Bulls team who is looking to go deep in the playoffs this year.

This is probably too unrealistic logistically more than anything. Not only would the Bulls have to take on another max contract, but they would probably have to give up too much to get too many questions marks regarding their future. While it is easy to say Deron Williams would most likely gel with the Bulls, things in Chicago are already going just fine as Rose starts to get more and more comfortable with his game. Too much risk and not enough reward for this deal to actually happen.

But the thought of Derrick Rose and Deron Williams playing alongside each other is curious. I know I would love to see it happen in the future.
