The veteran purge in the NFL continues as teams are cutting veteran players to save cap space — with Reggie Bush being the latest casualty.

The Detroit Lions are trying to flip over couch cushions and tear up the carpet to try and find any money that they can to pay Ndamukong Suh this offseason and that means cutting veterans who are big names with sizable deals. There won’t be any news that Calvin Johnson or Matthew Stafford are cut but that’s not true of everyone on the roster.

After a promising few years with the team, the Detroit Lions have released Reggie Bush in rather shocking fashion.

This news comes after interesting word that the Green Bay Pacers have released linebacker A.J. Hawk, who is also a veteran who won’t wait long to find work.

But Bush’s situation is a little more complicated, as there has been a lot that has happened in the past few years that may hurt his value on the open market. There were the allegations that he was involved in some shady activities off the field, and then there’s the injuries on the field that have been holding him back.

He wasn’t all that productive in 2014 for the Lions and that’s clearly being reflected in his release on Wednesday afternoon.

While A.J. Hawk will find work again in the very near future, it’s going to be a little harder for Bush to find work again moving forward. He is banged up, he’s past his prime and he’s being pushed out of his job by two younger running backs.

There will be someone who gives Bush a shot, but he’s nearly a decade into his career and running backs are as disposal as they’ve ever been. That’s bad news for Bush but it’s good news for the backs who are being given a chance to replace him.
