Photos of Melissa Benoist in official Supergirl costume released by Warner Bros.

In the words of that one Krystal Harris song that you only remember because it was in The Princess Diaries: “I’m Supergirl, and I’m here to save the world!”

The first photos of Melissa Benoist in her Supergirl costume for the highly-awaited television pilot have been released. Take a look below:

The first picture (above) shows a close-up of Benoist, to show more detail on the bodice with the famous ‘S’, as well as the lovely lady’s glowing face. The second (below) is a full-body shot.

The outfit was designed by Colleen Atwood, and you can definitely tell that she was also in charge of the costumes for Arrow and The Flash, because the style from the two carries on here to Supergirl— in a good way. Atwood, a three-time Academy Award winner for her designs in Hollywood, take on a younger, fresher, and definitely more practical approach to superhero costumes that I’m in love with.

In Supergirl, Atwood gave Benoist’s Kara Danvers the typical short skirt, but also an edgier set of knee-high boots and a cape that even Edna Mode of The Incredibles would approve of. Of the costume, Atwood said this in a statement:

"“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”"

Benoist tweeted her excitement about the outfit yesterday, which was then retweeted by her former Glee costars and lifelong nerds, Chris Colfer and Grant Gustin, the latter currently donning another one of Atwood’s costumes every Tuesday night as The Flash.

Everything with Supergirl currently seems to be in full swing, as Ali Adler, one of the developing minds and executive producers behind the show, has been sharing several behind-the-scenes tidbits from her Instagram:

Supergirl will focus on the life of 24 year-old Kara Danvers, born as Kryptonian Kara Zor-El, living her life on Earth after being taken in by a family there, and her transitioning from hiding her powers to using them for the forces of good after an unexpected disaster reveals them to all.

Word is that former Supergirl and Superman, Helen Slater and Dean Cain, will guest star in the pilot, which is set to premiere in the 2015-16 television season on CBS.
