Ryan Mathews is expected to sign a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday
Former San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is expected to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday. He is in town and is expected to sign a deal to join Chip Kelly’s offense.
The Eagles have taken on a number of players that are injury risks this offseason already with the addition of Kiko Alonso, Sam Bradford and Walter Thurmond. The team is now adding the oft-injured Ryan Mathews into the mix to fill the hole that was left after the team traded away LeSean McCoy.
Ryan has a great combination of size and speed and could be one of the best backs in the league. He just can’t find a way to stay on the field and he often frustrated fans by fumbling the football. Last season, Ryan was only able to play in 6 games and finished with 330 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. He averaged 4.5 yards per carry.
It will be interesting to see how Ryan does in the fast paced Chip Kelly offense. He will get a number of opportunities to touch the football, but how long will he last until he has to sit on the sideline with an injury? All that wear and tear on getting the football could mean that he is on the sideline even quicker.
The team will have Mathews and Darren Sproles take the responsibility in the backfield that was left by LeSean McCoy. The Eagles are still going to be busy this offseason and will be looking to add more players onto the roster. What will the Eagles do next? Will they look to add more players that have been injured often and hope to find a good deal with them?
