Detroit Lions NFL Mock Draft 2015: Latest 7-round projections
By Ryan Lehrman
Round 2 Pick 54: Alex Carter, CB (Stanford)
The Lions hosted cornerback Alex Carter in a pre-draft trip to Allen Park on March 11. While this certainly doesn’t set anything in stone, it could very well foreshadow the Lions’ draft-day decisions.
Carter, who has solid size for the position at 6-foot, 200 pounds, is an impressive tackler. As a junior at Stanford last year, he record 41 tackles and one interception — against Heisman winner Marcus Mariota. He started as a true freshman in 2012 and took home All-Pac-12 honorable in all three seasons. Not only does Carter have the frame to cover bigger targets, he tracks the ball well in order to position himself to make plays.
For Detroit, what started out as a shaky cornerback position at the beginning of last year quickly became threadbare as nickel cornerback Bill Bentley (ACL) and Nevin Lawson (foot) fell to the injured reserve. Consequently, converted safeties had to sub in. Depending on whether or not Carter can shave down his 4.51-seconds 40-yard dash time he ran at the combine, he might be able to spend more time at the Lions’ training camp.
