The San Diego Chargers have reportedly signed free agent cornerback Jimmy Wilson.

The San Diego Chargers are quietly putting together a nice offseason. Prior to the official start of free agency, they re-signed cornerback Brandon Flowers. Then on Tuesday they signed offensive guard Orlando Franklin who came from the division rival Denver Broncos.

And on Friday evening they further solidified their secondary, signing free agent cornerback Jimmy Wilson, according to Ravens insider Aaron Wilson.

Wilson is a four-year NFL veteran who spent all of his professional seasons thus far in Miami with the Dolphins. They drafted him in the seventh round with pick No. 235 overall in 2011 after he played his college ball at Montana–a FCS (D-1AA) school.

The 28-year-old was born and raised in San Diego, as he went to Point Loma High School.

His signing comes at a time when the future of the Chargers in San Diego is murky, though they will be there at least through the 2015 season, meaning that for at least one season Wilson will be able to play in front of childhood family and friends.

Wilson has played in 60 of the 64 potential games over that four-year span, starting 21 of them. He has two sacks and more importantly four interceptions.

It wasn’t until this past season, though, that Wilson became a full-time starter. He started 13 of the 14 games he played in for Miami, recording his most tackles, 48, but interestingly his fewest passes defensed with just two.

His one interception netted a 31-yard return.

For his career, Wilson has 153 tackles, 16 passes defensed and those four interceptions.

Terms of the deal were not immediately made available, but given this deal coming when free agency has moved to “phase two”, it is likely a short deal–somewhere in the vicinity of two years, at $2-3 million per year.

The Chargers now have a player who is thrilled to be in San Diego, “To have my name on the back of that Chargers’ jersey is a dream for every San Diego kid, this  is a dream come true.”

In between smiles, “I’m so happy to be back here playing for my type of people and my type of fans. I know what type of town this is. Qualcomm was a home for me. I went and watched motocross and everything you can do at a stadium.”

The 5’11” corner relies on swagger and toughness, which he hopes to add to the current Chargers’ secondary which includes Eric Weddle and the aforementioned Flowers.
