The filmmaker told interviewers that the script is being written now.
From the website:
"“It’s half a script right now, and we’re pulling our loot together,” he said. “We’ve got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be shooting.”"
There’s no word yet as to whether the original cast — which includes the likes of Jason Lee and Shannon Doherty, not to mention Ben Affleck and Stan Lee.
To be completely honest, I’m not sure if this is a sequel anyone really needs. Not so much because Mallrats was so perfectly wrapped up or whatever, but rather because the whole conceit of the film — hanging out at a mall all day — is about as relevant as New Coke.
Then again I suppose it would be funny to see what Brodie and T.S. are up to now that malls are lame. Perhaps they’ve been hanging out at Apple Stores and Starbucks instead? Also, I’m not too sure about how excited Affleck would be about coming back and revisiting his dark past with Kevin Smith now that he’s got an Oscar under his belt, and is doing things that’s less raunchy rom com and more brooding and serious.
This all comes at the heels of the script for Clerks III finishing up. With filming for the picture starting up in a couple of months, it’s clear that Smith has his hands full with the View Askewniverse.
