Insurgent overcomes the competition, earns the top spot this weekend

The next chapter in The Divergent Series, Insurgent, overcame the magic of Cinderella to earn the Top Spot at the Box Office this weekend.

We knew there was going to be an intense battle for the Top Spot at the Box Office this weekend, but it seems as if Tris and Four were able to overcome the magic of a Disney princess as the second chapter in The Divergent Series, Insurgent was able to claim the Top Spot this weekend.

The film, which is based off of the second novel in The Divergent Series of the same name by bestselling author Veronica Roth, continues the story of Tris Pryor as she makes her way through a Dystopian world that has been turned on its head by its class system and the person seeking to control it.

Insurgent certainly made its mark this weekend, bringing in an estimated $54 million over the weekend. Surprisingly enough, this is almost exactly the same as what the first film in the series, Divergent, pulled in on its opening weekend last year.

The second film in the series didn’t do so badly in the foreign box office either. Insurgent pulled in nearly 46.5% of its worldwide gross of $101 million from overseas where the film brought in around $47 million thus far.

Dropping just one spot from last weekend is the Walt Disney live-action adventure Cinderella. The story of one of Disney most-storied fairytales brought in just around $34.5 million over the weekend, which extends the film’s two-week domestic gross to around $122 million.

The film also continues to perform well in the overseas markets at the same time. Cinderella brought in nearly $131 million in the foreign box office, which gives the film a worldwide gross of $253.1 million.

Coming in third place this weekend is the Liam Neeson thriller Run All Night. The film dropped just one position from last weekend, bringing in around $5.1 million in its second week in release. This brings Run All Night to a two-week domestic gross of $19.7 million.

This is almost sad for a movie of this caliber. Even when you add in the $15.2 million that the film has garnered in the foreign box office, it still hasn’t reached the $50 million production budget with its worldwide gross of $34.9 million. Does this mean that films like this one are a thing of the past, or is this a one-time bump in the road for someone like Liam Neeson?

Debuting to a weak $5.0 million this weekend is the action-packed thriller The Gunman starring Sean Penn and Javier Bardem. The Gunman was barely able to muster up $5 million in its opening weekend; however, we knew the film would face tough competition with a similar film like Run All Night already in release.

Being entirely honest, these two films could have been the unravelling of one another being released in such short proximity of one another, but this is something that we may never know for sure. Given that the film has yet to bring in any real money overseas, it doesn’t spell well for the crime drama.

Still holding on to a spot in the Top 5 this weekend is Kingsman: The Secret Service starring Colin Firth. Kingsman brought in around $4.6 million over the weekend, bringing the film’s six-week domestic gross to around $114.6 million.

When you add in the $180.6 million that the film has brought in overseas, the film has a worldwide gross of around $295.2 million. The good news for Kingsman: The Secret Service is that this puts the film well above the $81 million production budget on the film.

Judging by what we have seen thus far, the exciting adventure still has a few weeks on the chart before we see it start to slip away, but as the summer season gets closer and closer the battle is bound to heat up exponentially.

While next weekend is definitely going to be a hilarious time at the Box Office, we’re not 100% sold that these films have the draw to take down Insurgent this early in the game. There are two mainstream films making their way into the picture next weekend; the Warner Bros. comedy Get Hard starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart and the animated adventure Home featuring the voice talents of Jim Parsons, Rihanna, and more.

Get Hard tells the story of a James King (Ferrell) who is brought down for fraud and headed straight to San Quentin. Knowing he won’t survive a day behind bars, he reaches out to Darnell Lewis (Hart), who has never spent a day behind bars himself, to try to teach him how to “Get Hard” and survive prison.

Home tells the story of a young alien by the name of Oh (Parsons), who after a series of mishaps is on the run from his own people. Once he makes his way to Earth, he comes across a young girl by the name of Tip (Rihanna) who is on a journey of her own. Now, the two of them have merged paths into one unforgettable adventure where the fate of the world may very well hang in the balance.

Both of these films have the potential for a sizeable opening weekend, but the question remains whether or not it will be big enough to bring down Insurgent after only one week.

While we wait to see how next weekend’s battle for Box Office supremacy plays out, let’s take a look at the Top 10 at the Box Office this weekend courtesy of Box Office Mojo.
