With the running back market slimming by the days, the Chicago Bears brought in an offensive weapon in Jacquizz Rodgers, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons.

It’s no secret that Matt Forte is the man for the running back position for the Chicago Bears. Although he is greatly underused and needs more carries, Forte is one of the better running backs in the NFL and his ability in both the run game and passing game are extremely above-average.

In today’s NFL, the offensive weapon position is becoming more used around the league. This position is played by players who show the ability to make an impact in a variety of ways for an offense. The Bears added a weapon on Tuesday by signing Jacquizz Rodgers.

Over the past four years, Rodgers has played for the Atlanta Falcons in a backup running back role. Up until 2014, Rodgers was a real solid player for the Falcons. However, when the Falcons added Devonta Freeman in last year’s draft, the writing was on the wall that Rodgers really had no room in the Falcons’ offense, as the younger Freeman was faster and simply just better.

After visiting today with the Bears, Ian Rapoport reported on Twitter that the Bears and Rodgers agreed upon a one-year deal.

By signing Rodgers, the Bears now have two intriguing running backs who could play big minutes in Forte and Rodgers. But again, Forte is the main guy on this offense, while Rodgers will really just be a change-of-pace back. For the Bears to protect Jay Cutler and get the most out of him at the same time, running the football will be wise. By signing Rodgers, the Bears gave out a hint that their offensive intentions will be to feature the running game in 2015.
