Detroit Red Wings left wing Drew Miller takes a skate to the face in a terrifying scene as the Wings face off with the Ottawa Senators.

Anytime a player laces up their skates and makes their way down the tunnel to the ice, there is an understanding that there are certain risks involved. After all, hockey is one of the most hard-hitting sports in the world. Throw in a stick, a puck, and some razor sharp skates and you have the potential for disaster.

Unfortunately, disaster is a pretty accurate way to describe the scene that played out last night at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit as the Detroit Red Wings took on the Ottawa Senators. In fact, for at least one player, the scene was downright horrific.

Allow us to set the scene for you. Just about 1:04 had ticked off the clock in the first period between the Detroit Red Wings and the Ottawa Senators at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

The faceoff had been brought into the Red Wings’ defensive zone. It would be Red Wings center Luke Glendening and Senators right wing Mark Stone who would meet in front of the referee awaiting the puck to drop.

Before anyone even knew what was going on something horrible had gone down.

Stone gets tipped over by Glendening as he attempts to regain his footing. This causes Stone to raise his foot in the air to counterbalance his weight and prevent him from face planting on the ice. Unfortunately, in the process of preventing himself from hitting the ice, he inadvertently nailed Red Wings left wing Drew Miller in the face with is skate.

Just in case you missed the game and didn’t see the whole thing play out, here is a look at the scary scene at the faceoff circle. Thankfully, the video itself isn’t too graphic for normal viewing.

Immediately, Miller drops his stick, puts his hand over his face, and speedily skates towards the Red Wings bench. He is immediately followed down the tunnel by Red Wings Head Athletic Trainer Piet Van Zant.

There is some good news to come out of this one. According to Nick Cotsonika of Yahoo! Sports, Miller suffered two deep lacerations around his right eye, but there was no apparent damage to the eye itself.

Unfortunately, the same thing can’t be said for the rest of his face. The cut itself looks pretty nasty and, of course, is in a very dangerous place. On the bright side, if he has to dress up like a salty pirate anytime soon he won’t need a whole lot of makeup.

There was no sort of penalty assessed on the play as this was obviously unintentional and unfortunately the product of nothing more than a freak accident. There is no word on whether or not Miller will be available on Thursday night when the Red Wings take on the Boston Bruins at the Joe.

All we can say is that we wish Drew Miller a speedy recovery and are incredibly thankful that this incident didn’t turn out to be near as tragic as it could have.
