Minor league baseball team brings craft brewery to ballpark
This minor league baseball team is bringing a craft brewery to the ball park
Minor league baseball teams are known for offering great fan experiences and the Durham Bulls are no exception. In fact, their latest effort might be hard to top.
The Durham Bulls have installed a craft brewery in its ballpark. This season, The Bull Durham Beer Company will start brewing and selling on location at the ballpark’s main concourse. The Durham Bulls Athletic Park, in Durham, North Carolina, is currently the only minor league stadium that offers an on-site brewery.
According to head brewer Tate Little, the team will make and sell two signature beers: Water Tower Wheat and Lollygagger, a Kolsch-style ale. Other offerings will be available throughout the season.
“Our one-of-a-kind craft brewery will redefine the game experience,” said executive brewmaster Sebastian Wolfrum. “Fans can not only enjoy freshly brewed beverages, but be a part of the process as we create two inaugural beers.”

Wolfrum, along with others behind the measure, has kept the Bull Durham Beer a secret for months. The equipment was ordered in November (from Germany), the name came a few weeks later.
The system purchased by Bull Durham Brewing Company is capable of brewing between 35 and 40 barrels per month. One barrel houses approximately 250 pints. While the brewing will begin next week, the actual product won’t be ready until May.
Don’t be surprised to see a large influx of fans next month.
The craft beer will be available all year-round, not just during baseball season, as the Bull Durham Beer Company’s offerings will also be available at nearby bars and restaurants at the American Tobacco Campus.
Minor league baseball teams are infamous for luring fans to the park with gimmicky-theme nights. In 2014, for example, the Brooklyn Cyclones hosted a 90’s Nickelodeon Night and the Gwinnett Braves hosted a meet-and-greet with infamous pro wrestler Ric Flair. No team except the Bulls, though, can offer fans craft beer brewed on site.
The Bulls, who began the season yesterday with a 1-0 win, will host their first home game on Wednesday, April 15. The 2015 season marks the 20th anniversary of Bull Durham Athletic Park.
How about planning a trip to Durham to celebrate? It’s only right.
