Top 10 most disappointing things during the 2015 NBA season
9. Robbed of our rookie showdown
I don’t think there has been a more hyped up duo entering the NBA draft together like Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker since Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James did so in 2003. Both players were highly monitored in high school and once they entered college, it was evident they would be the next two to go “one and done” at their respective schools.
Once entering the NBA, we got a taste at what the future held for these young stars. Parker averaged 12.3 points per game, his athleticism and size were unmatched by most small forwards, not to mention that he is just 20 years old. Wiggins has averaged 16.8 points per game this year and his production level has only been going up. To finish out the season he averaged over 23 points per game and is the favorite for Rookie of the Year.
We even got a little preview of what the future might hold for this incredible rivalry. On November 26th, the two went head to head in what was a matchup of the two best rookies in the NBA. Even though both were still trying to get comfortable on their respective teams, we saw a few splashes of brilliance. One of which came in the third quarter when Wiggins threw a lay-up from Parker out of bounds with a block that sent quite the message to his rival.
Milwaukee would end up winning the game, but Timberwolves guard Zach LaVine summed up what the game really meant to the two rookies pretty well in an interview. “How highly touted they were in high school, even in grade school coming up. They were both No. 1, No. 2 and just switching on and off their whole careers. I feel like it might be like that even (in the NBA) because they’re just going to be going at each other.”
We never got to see the two go at each other for much longer this season, just 3 short weeks later Parker went down with a season ending ACL tear that required surgery. A disappointing end to what was a hopeful rookie season. Wiggins has cruised to the top of rookie of the year candidacy and the next chapter in the rivalry between the two was delayed until the following season.
