5. Another Derrick Rose knee injury

Has there been more of a heartbreaking story than Derrick Rose and his history of knee surgeries the past three years in the NBA? Probably not. The 2010-11 MVP was once considered to be one of the best point guards in the NBA. Then a career altering knee injury placed Rose on and off the injury list for three years.

This year it finally seemed that Rose and his injury problems were behind him as we entered the second half of the season. He was getting comfortable taking the ball to the bucket, showing spurts of that magic Chicago Bulls fans hadn’t felt since 2011. Rose just couldn’t keep healthy for long and a torn meniscus sidelined Rose for close to 2 months after the All Star break. Now, as the playoffs begin, Rose has just a few games back to get ready for the most competitive basketball he will have played for three years.

I can’t help but feel sorry for the guy. Not only has he dealt with horrible injuries but the media has also been more than critical to the way he handled his comeback. Constantly getting scrutinized for not giving a timeline for when he will return and then coming back too late are probably a bit unfair. I don’t think Rose’s commitment to the Bulls should be questioned, but it has been and it is something he has to deal with moving forward and attempt at proving the critics wrong.

The latest injury to Derrick Rose took away from what the Bulls were able to do this year. If Rose was healthy I would feel comfortable saying they would be fighting for a no. 2 seed late in the regular season rather than a no. 3 or 4 seed. We will never know what could have been if his knees stayed intact over the course of his career. Which is one of the most frustrating and horribly sad things to have happened to Chicago since Michael Jordan stopped playing basketball.
