In response to the NBA fining Toronto Raptors GM Masai Ujiri, Drake replies via Instagram with his own lyrics.

It’s the new, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined.” Only better.

The NBA fined Toronto Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri $35,000 on Monday for “using obscene language in a public setting.” Ujiri incurred the fine for his comments about Paul Pierce prior to Saturday’s Game 1 of its NBA playoffs series against the Washington Wizards.

The Raptors organization, Ujiri’s employer, was fined an additional $25,000, bringing the total charges to $60,000.

At a fan rally prior to Saturday’s game, Ujiri used an expletive when addressing a crowd of fans outside the Air Canada Centre.

“People want me to say something about Paul Pierce, but we don’t give a [expletive] about it,” said Ujiri. Pierce currently plays for the Wizards.

Of course Drake, one of the world’s most famous rappers and the Raptor’s only A-list fan, had something to say about it.

Late Sunday night, Drake posted a picture of Ujiri on his Instagram with the caption, “We’ll take the fine for that. That’s been where you find us at.” Emojis followed because Drake is an expert marketer.

What makes the post noteworthy is the the caption itself refers to Drake’s own lyrics from the song “Know Yourself” off his most recent album If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.

The Raptors, who lost to the Wizards in Game 1 on Saturday, will pay Game 2 in Toronto on Tuesday night. Maybe the $60,000 fine will fire up the team. It certainly got Drake going.

Honestly, celebrity fans of NBA teams, especially recording artists that have their own songs, should do this more often. Now, if only Billy King of the Brooklyn Nets would get fined, we could have Jay-Z post a reply on social media.

“What’s 50 grand to a [person] like me. Can you please remind me?” Is our early leader in the clubhouse.
