2nd. NL East. New York Mets. 6. player. 3.

The first place New York Mets, who won their ninth straight game Tuesday, are among of the most surprising stories of the early season. We knew the squad can pitch – especially with ace Matt Harvey – but their bullpen has been just as good as their starting rotation.

On Sunday, the Mets beat Miami 7-6 and earned their Major League leading eighth save in the process. Not bad for a team that had its closer, Jenrry Mejia, suspended 80 games for PED use.

With Mejia out of action, Jeurys Familia has stepped in to save six games in six opportunities. The 25-yer old right-hander has a 2.35 ERA, a 0.78 WHIP and has held opponents to a .160 batting average in 7.2 innings. He has also stuck out nine.

Carlos Torres, Alex Torres, Sean Gilmartin and Buddy Carlyle have held down the middle innings for the Mets, and have helped New York combine for a solid 3.16 ERA in 48.1 innings of relief work. Even better, the Mets bullpen is one of only six to hold opponents to a batting average under .200, and rank third in the Majors and tops in the National League at .172.
