NFL Draft: Ranking 5 Potential Landing Spots For Marcus Mariota
By Robby Sabo
2. New York Jets, 6th Overall Pick
Draft Possibility: Very Possible
Then we get to the New York Jets.
The team who took Geno Smith early in the second-round during the 2013 NFL Draft. The team who is without a quarterback to build the franchise around. The team, who in all indications, doesn’t want anything to do with Marcus Mariota.
Or could that feeling just be a genius, well-crafted smokescreen?
Listen, none of us know Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan yet. We know he comes from a scouting background, we know Charley Casserly swears by him, and we know he was willing to spend the money former boss John Idzik wasn’t willing to spend.
Aside from that, we don’t know Maccagnan at all.
Many outlets have the Jets in the “not interested” group as it pertains to Mariota. As we’ve seen many times before, however, it could’ve all been an elaborate hoax.
If Whisenhunt and the Titans pass at No. 2, and keep their slot, Mariota will most likely be available to the Jets at No. 6. Nobody who’s eyeing to trade up will believe he’ll go at No. 3 through No. 5.
The only way it happens is if a team eyeing Mariota in a trade-up thinks the Jets are in on him.
At the moment, all indications point to Maccagnan biding his time at the quarterback position until 2016. But, this is the NFL Draft, after all; and it’s always tough to pass up on a possible franchise quarterback when he’s staring you in the face.
Does Marcus Mariota Fit?
Newly minted head coach Todd Bowles is a defensive guy. The jury is out on whether he’ll continue the Rex Ryan debauchery job at the quarterback position or not. For that reason alone, we cannot put the rating higher than 6 out of 10.
Chan Gailey as the offensive coordinator brings some value, as does Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall out wide. Young tight-end Jace Amaro helps too.
Nothing screams “perfect fit” for the kid to wear green and white aside from the mass-marketing idea of a Heisman Trophy winner coming to New York City.
