Randy Gregory grew up in a military family moving around the country from Tennessee, Alabama, Ohio, Missouri, Indiana. His parents actually met in Sicily, Italy where both were stationed in the Air Force.

Whether the stress of moving around, or perhaps having so much talent, or whatever else caused Gregory to use marijuana so frequently in college is a question better suited for a mental health expert. What is not in question is how Gregory owned his shortcomings off the field as he attempts to move forward after the NFL Draft.

Gregory said felt he had no choice.

“There is no hiding it,” Gregory told FanSided. “One of the main things is trying to be as transparent as possible. You can say I’m not honest, you can say I’m B.S.ing, the main thing is one team believed in me and I’m going to work my butt off to make sure they are proud, make sure I’m making plays for them, make sure they believe they made the right pick.”

Gregory tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, only five weeks prior to the NFL Draft. There is further concern that he won’t be able to keep enough weight on to play defensive line. There are additional questions whether he can handle the mental stress of the NFL.

Gregory will have former Jet and Chiefs coach Herm Edwards as a mentor going forward. He is taking regular drug tests and his THC levels continue to drop. Gregory claims the last time he smoked marijuana was December, but tested positive at the combine because the drug stayed in his system.

Unlike Shane Ray, who was drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos, Gregory has more concerns and lengthier marijuana problems including two failed tests at Nebraska. Despite his past, Gregory is betting on himself and so are the Dallas Cowboys.
