5. Titans pass on trade, pick Mariota

This is based on a lot of speculation. Supposedly, the Philadelphia Eagles not only inquired but offered a serious haul including several veteran defensive players and Sam Bradford to move up to No. 2 to take Marcus Mariota, and the Tennessee Titans declined.

After the Eagles made their pick at No. 20 of Southern California wide receiver Nelson Agholar, Chip Kelly denied that any players were offered. But that doesn’t necessarily mean any were not. It may be that Kelly simply doesn’t want to come across as desperate and seem as if he has no confidence in Sam Bradford.

If true, and we’ll probably never know for sure, the Titans made an unwise decision. First, Marcus Mariota does not fit Ken Whisenhunt’s offensive scheme. He prefers a pure dropback passer.

Second, the Titans still need to improve their defense, and aren’t going to win next year or anytime soon with Mariota. They could have improved their defense to the point that they become one of the better units in the league, and taken their quarterback next season.

But it was not to be. Instead, the Titans took Mariota and will have to either rework their offensive system to fit Mariota or make him a dropback passer.

Which one happens we’ll see. It will be very interesting. Very interesting indeed.
