Landon Collins, SS, New York Giants

The New York Giants traded up to snag strong safety Landon Collins when he surprisingly fell out of the first round, and he immediately became the best safety on the roster. He is almost the only one, as Cooper Taylor, Nat Berhe and fellow rookie Mykkele Thompson are the only other safeties (Thompson and Cooper are free safeties).

While many feel Collins is best fit in a defense where he is an ‘in-the-box- safety, the Giants feel he is just as good in coverage, which makes sense as he played all over the field at Alabama.

The Giants defense has regressed a bit the last few years, especially  against the run, so you can expect Collins to be involved in every aspect of the safety position because the team simply needs him to be.

He’ll also have multiple opportunities to assist cornerbacks Prince Amukamara and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in coverage against some very good receivers, which will give him plenty of chances to earn himself some consideration for those Pro Bowl berths.

Hopefully the Giants defense will be ascendant over the next few years, because that will help Collins get noticed as well, especially as he figures to be a huge part of it. Like the rest of the secondary, he’s going to need the front seven to step up like they did last year (with 47 sacks, fourth most in the NFL) and keep the pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Collins is a very talented player, and the Giants got him at a great value at the top of the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. It won’t be long before he is rewarding them with Pro Bowl seasons.
