Brandon Scherff, OT, Washington Redskins

I was a little surprised that former Iowa tackle Brandon Scherff went in the first five picks in the 2015 NFL Draft, as I didn’t feel any of the tackle from this year were worthy. For a top ten tackle, you want a relatively finished product who can step right in at left tackle without any problems.

Well the Washington Redskins grabbed him and slotted him in as their right tackle. While I may not agree with the value, Washington needed a tackle and they got the most reliable one in the draft.

Scherff is a powerful offensive lineman, who can kick inside if you need help at guard, but really played well for the Hawkeyes at tackle (he won the Outland Trophy). The right side of the line is a little less pressure than stepping into the left, so it’s safer to have a rookie there.

Of course, with Robert Griffin III under center, you never know when you have to veer out and block on the run regardless of what side you are on.

Scherff will be getting plenty of opportunities to stand out and perform this year. Looking forward, he seems well poised to be a huge factor on this offensive line no matter which side of the line he is on. As Washington improves its offense, Scherff will be able to show he is a complete tackle, able to be a road-grader on run plays and a shield on passing plays.
