Designing 007 opens in Madrid
Over the course of 50 years, an impressive collection of props and designs from the James Bond series has accumulated. Elegant costumes, gadgets, colorful drawings, storyboards and detailed models…all of this can be seen in “Designing 007”, the largest exhibition about James Bond. After having been on display in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, the exhibition officially opened its doors today at the Fernan Gomez Centro Cultural De La Villa in Madrid, Spain. The opening was preceeded by a press conference and Gala event in the hotel Gran Meliá Fénix on May 07.

Having visited “Designing 007” in Rotterdam together with the James Bond Club Germany last November, I can highly recommend a visit. It is a well put together assortment of Bond history, cleverly spread over several themed rooms. To throw you right into the fascinating world of Bond, you begin your tour by walking through a Gunbarrel that leads into the first room. You pause for a moment in front of Auric Goldfingers massive tuxedo and it gives you a sense of how tubby actor Gert Frobe really was. Then there´s Ian Flemings Royal 1953 Quiet Deluxe Gold portable typewriter that he used in his Jamaican retreat ‘Goldeneye’ for typing the Bond novels. You have never been that close to the tool with which the world-famous fictional hero was created.

Wandering through the rooms with hundreds of exhibits tells you the story of Bond and you gradually grasp how much complex and time-consuming work has gone into the production design of the 23 films of the series. From the metal hands of villain Dr. No, the tank model from ‘GOLDENEYE’ or the signature gun from ‘LICENCE TO KILL’ to the bathing gown of Octopussy and the legendary Aston Martin DB5 – the items on display will make the heart of any Bond fan leap for joy. If you happen to be in Madrid, don´t miss your opportunity to get up close and personal with the extraordinary history of James Bond.
