Mel Gibson showed up to the red carpet at the Mad Max premiere.

Mel Gibson is one of those celebrities where you forget that he exists until he shows up randomly at a Hollywood premiere. Such was the case recently, when the Lethal Weapon star showed up at the Los Angeles premiere for Mad Max: Fury Road on Thursday. He was there to show support to his old franchise and also to be just down right Mel Gibson-crazy.

Gibson, as many of you know, has been out of the limelight for the better part of a decade ever since he ran into some controversy surrounding some anit-Semitic and sexist statements he made while criminally drunk.

The 59-year-old Signs star seemed bright eyed and bushy tailed when he showed up to the red carpet though. His appearance caused quite the stir when people presumably rubbed their eyes and realized who it was.

From Us Weekly:

"Gibson’s late, unexpected arrival at the TLC Chinese Theatre resulted in crazy cheers from the fans who lined the red carpet at the Hollywood venue.“Mel was on fine form,” a premiere-goer told Us Weekly. “Slapping backs, hugging people, laughing and generally looking thrilled to be there.”"

Star Tom Hardy might have been less than enthused and more intimidated by the Passion of the Christ director. Speaking to the magazine, he spoke at length about how nervous he was for the role.

"“It’s great to have Mel here,” Hardy told reporters. “I didn’t expect him to come. When I got the part, it was good, but suddenly it struck me, “Oh, sh-t, everybody loves Mel. And I’m the new kid, and they’re going to hate me. So I suck already and I haven’t even started'” the 37-year-old actor said.“So that was a concern. George created Mad Max with Mel, [he’s] synonymous [with the role]. I’ve just inherited the legacy. And it’s my job just to turn up and do as he asks. I’m a different person to Mel. But at the end of the day, it’s George’s further development of his imagination with this character,” he added."

Gibson played the titular character in the films first three incarnations; Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981), and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)

Mad Max: Fury Road tells the continuing saga of Mad Max as he battles roaving bands of desert gang members. Same old Mad Max mayhem we come to expect from the franchise. The film will have a wide release on May 15th.
