Predicting 10 best NFL quarterbacks in 2016
By Andrew Garda
Will San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers remain with the Chargers and not become quarterback Philip Rivers? He’s at the end of his contract and we’ve already seen the maneuvering begin. The rumor that Rivers had requested a trade was likely leaked by Rivers’ camp as an early gambit for his next contract.
It’s a contract which should pay him very well regardless, and I expect San Diego to pay him (even if they are in Los Angeles). Why? Because franchise quarterbacks are tough to come by and Rivers is definitely that. Look at the Houston Texans slapping together a quarterback position with duct tape and hope. Or the New York Jets, who have sunk several years into Geno Smith (which seems to have failed) after sinking many years into Mark Sanchez to no avail. Or the Buffalo Bills and their mess of a quarterback situation.
You don’t toss a franchise guy away. So Rivers will remain a Charger in all likelihood. It’s been good for him too, as his career is back on track since Mike McCoy became the head coach. Rivers now also has a new running back in Melvin Gordon who should keep the defense honest and two very good wide receivers in Keenan Allen and Malcom Floyd. And if you’re worried about life after Antonio Gates (which may happen as soon as next year), don’t. Ladarius Green is an excellent tight end who can stretch the field and do a lot of what Gates has been able to.
Rivers is poised to continue his good fortune with the Chargers and 2016 could be one of his better years.
