Fantasy baseball starting pitchers: Studs, duds, and sleepers-May 21, 2015
3 Starting Pitcher Sleepers
1. Jesse Chavez-Oakland Athletics: Chavez is available in two-thirds of ESPN leagues despite his solid start to the season. Chavez has stepped up since joining the starting rotation five starts ago. He has a strong 2.63 ERA that shows how well he has pitched despite his 1-3 record. He has two quality starts in his last three outings, and I think he’ll put up another one today against the Rays.
2. Jorge De La Rosa-Colorado Rockies: At home and against the Phillies, De La Rosa will look to build on his exceptional outing in his last start against the Dodgers. De La Rosa started the season late and entered his last start with a 9.56 ERA. He looked brilliant though throwing 7.1 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits to LA. De La Rosa will try to put together another outing like that tonight against the Phillies. The reason I think he is worth a look as a streamer in the 98%+ of ESPN leagues where he is still available while I’d avoid Shoemaker is that he is in a much more favorable matchup and didn’t struggle for nearly as long as Shoemaker did. He’s a risky play, but De La Rosa is one to consider adding from your season-long league waiver wire.
3. Archie Bradley-Arizona Diamondbacks: His last start didn’t go as well as hoped after Bradley missed a few weeks after taking a line-drive to the face. Bradley had looked great before that April 28th start against the Rockies, but the Phillies got to him in his return start as well as Bradley looked rusty giving up five hits and four runs in just two innings. He’ll look to get back on track today against the Marlins in Miami, and he’s a great pickup if you can afford to look a little more long term. Bradley has the potential to be a huge fantasy factor when he recovers, and if your league is not one of the 51.7% of leagues he’s owned in, he’s definitely worth a speculative pickup even if today’s start is still a bit rocky. I think he’ll turn it around soon, though, so watch his start today closely.
