One thing no one can argue about Ryan Tannehill is that he has all of the physical tools you could ever ask for in an NFL quarterback. He has the size (6-foot-4, 220 pounds), mobility, arm strength and mentality to be a franchise signal-caller. By all accounts he’s a good leader, owns the huddle and is outstanding at handling the duties necessary as the cornerstone of the Miami Dolphins. He’s still just 26 years old and is nowhere near his prime.

Each year in the NFL Draft there is maybe one quarterback who possesses the natural ability Tannehill has. Occasionally a good draft comes around and there are two legitimate franchise guys available. Players possessing his skill set are incredibly rare, which is something the Dolphins understand. It would have been foolish not to give Tannehill an extension at this point since I can guarantee they don’t want to start looking for another long-term solution under center.

Guys with the natural talent Tannehill possesses simply don’t come along very often. While he’s not perfect, he’s also not a finished product. The potential for stardom is there. Guys like Brian Hoyer, Geno Smith, Matt Cassel and Josh McCown could be starting for NFL teams in Week 1, which should tell you how thin the league’s quarterback ranks actually are.

The Dolphins simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to keep a guy like Tannehill under contract long-term.
