According to BBC News, the legendary actor passed away on Sunday, June 7 at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital after being hospitalized for respiratory problem and heart failure. They later confirmed the news through A Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea council spokesman who informed them that the actor had indeed passed on Sunday and a death certificate had been issued on Monday.

Lee, who was knighted for his services to drama and charity in 2009, has had one of the most storied careers in all of Hollywood and whose life in film has spanned many decades. Before his life in film, Lee fought for his country in World War II as a member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

After the war had come to an end, Lee elected to pursue his passion and what would eventually make him a household name, the illustrious world of film and television. Lee’s career in the spotlight began in 1946 when he appeared in two episodes of the television series Kaleidoscope.

It would be two years later when Lee would score his first role in a motion picture when he was cast as a man by the name of Charles in the drama/mystery Corridor of Mirrors in 1948. From that point on, his career would span over six decades.

Lee would eventually come to star in a role that would officially make him a household name. In 1958 he was cast in the role of the legendary bloodsucking vampire Dracula in the film Horror of Dracula by well-known horror studio Hammer Film Productions.

Lee would reprise his role as Dracula in no less than nine more films ranging from Dracula: Prince of Darkness in 1966 to Dracula and Son in 1976. While Lee would go on to star in all manner of film, he will almost always be remembered as one of the greatest villain actors in the entire world.

Another one of Lee’s more popular villainous roles came when he was cast as the villain Scaramanga in the ninth film in the James Bond series titled “The Man with the Golden Gun” alongside Roger Moore, who was cast as the MI6 agent James Bond.

Christopher Lee also left his mark on two of the most famous film franchises in the world today. In 2001, he was cast in the role of Saruman in The Lord of the Rings franchise. Lee would reprise this role in all of the Lord of the Rings films as well as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Lee also delved into a Galaxy Far, Far Away when he was cast as the evil Count Dooku in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Lee would later provide the voice of Count Dooku for the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

There is no denying that the world of film has experienced an incredible loss today, and while Lee may no longer walk among the realm of the living his name and his legend will remain with us forever.
