Evan Mathis: Five potential landing spots
Indianapolis Colts (Cap space: $9.588 million)
The Colts are all-in, trying to win a Super Bowl this season. General manager Ryan Grigson was aggressive in free agency, signing outside linebacker Trent Cole and guard Todd Herremans, both men who were cut by the Eagles earlier this offseason. Grigson also signed running back Frank Gore and receiver Andre Johnson before drafting Phillip Dorsett in the first-round of the draft.
Currently, Jack Mewhort and Lance Louis are competing for the starting left guard spot. Neither one of these players inspires a ton of confidence with Louis ranking as one of PFF’s worst guards (62nd) and Mewhort checking in at 35th of 78 qualifying players at the position. Needless to say, Mathis would be a tremendous boost to the worst position group Indianapolis has.
Any hopes of being a championship team comes down to Andrew Luck. With him, the Colts are one of the best teams in football. Without him, Indianapolis is starting Matt Hasselbeck and lucky to win six games. If Luck can be protected better, it would be insane to not at least entertain the notion and make some phone calls.
The cap space is there for Grigson if he wants to make the move. With Herremans and Cole already in house, Grigson can try to use those relationships to foster a deal with Mathis. The Colts might already be the favorites to go to the Super Bowl out of the AFC, but Mathis would really solidify that feeling.
