Where is the 2015 U.S. Open being held?
The 2015 U.S. Open is being held at Chambers Bay Golf Course for the first time in history.
The PGA’s second major of the year, the U.S. Open, is heading into uncharted water in 2015, as it will be held at Chambers Bay Golf Course for the first time in history.
Chambers Bay is located in the city of University Place, Washington on the Puget Sound, just southwest of Tacoma. It’s a public course, and in terms of U.S. Open venues is quite young (having been established in 2007). Compare that to last year’s venue, Pinehurst No. 2, a private club established in 1895, and the 2015 U.S. Open is a complete about-face from 2014. Aside from hosting the Pacific Northwest’s first Open, Chambers Bay is also only one of a handful of public courses to hold the major.
Though this year’s U.S. Open is the first professional major to be held at Chambers Bay, it’s not the course’s first USGA event. In 2010 Chambers Bay hosted the United States Amateur Championship (U.S. Amateur), which was won by Peter Uihlein.
Chambers is a links course, and is one of the longest in U.S. Open history. This includes the 512/546 yards 14th hole, which will be the longest Par 4 in Open history (now 115 tournaments!).
In his spectator’s guide for the event, USGA President Thomas O’Toole expressed his excitement for bringing more events to the beautiful scenery up in the Pacific Northwest.
"Although this is the first time that our premier championship is being conducted in this region, the Pacific Northwest has a long, distinguished history in the game. Some of our most decorated players, eight-time USGA champion JoAnne Gunderson Carner and seven-time champion Anne Quast Sander among them, hail from this area. We first brought a USGA championship to this region more than 80 years ago, and we will host our 60th USGA championship in the area later this summer, when Portland Golf Club hosts the U.S. Women’s Amateur."
