Smash Mouth singer loses it after getting hit with loaf of bread, while the band plays on

Here’s a piece of advice you never knew you needed: do not throw pieces of bread at the lead singer of Smash Mouth.

Somebody once told Steve Harwell the world was gonna roll him, but he probably didn’t expect the word “roll” to  be taken so literally. Now he knows better.

Smash Mouth, ska-pop hitmakers of the ’90s best known for making everyone just a little bit dumber when they released “All Star,” played Taste Of Fort Collins, a food festival in Fort Collins, Colo., on Sunday night. Some of the vendors at the festival started giving away free loaves of bread; little did they know the destruction they had wrought. Soon enough, drunk audience members began pelting Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell with pieces of bread.

Harwell did not take kindly to this. Actually, that would be better said this way: he freaked the hell out. Harwell went off on the crowd for three full minutes, swearing up a storm, threatening to start beating people up, to the point that security had to come onto the stage and restrain him.

The fact that this all took place while the rest of the band was trying to play “All Star” just makes it better. Here’s the (NSFW) video of the incident:

The band may not have been able to complete playing their biggest hit, but the crowd probably didn’t miss out too much: Smash Mouth is known for playing “All Star” multiple times per show.

Of course, it’s also possible that someone is targeting ’90s performers for their crimes against music with bread-based revenge. Scott Stapp needs to watch his back; Shaggy may be getting hit with a French baguette right now; the Backstreet Boys may soon be being pelted with bagels. No one is safe.
