The Philadelphia Phillies should wave the white flag and go home for the summer. Frankly, it would give them more dignity than their pathetic play does. On Tuesday night, during a horrific 19-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in which they allowed eight home runs, Philadelphia officially came off the rails.

Occasionally in these blowouts, a manager will allow a position player to pitch an inning for comedic relief and to save the bullpen. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg went insanely overboard, allowing outfielder Jeff Francoeur to throw 48 pitches in the seventh and eighth innings combined. In the eighth, Francoeur loaded the bases with one out, prompting pitching coach Bob McClure to call the bullpen.

The only problem? McClure got a freaking busy signal. Per USA Today and MLB.com:

All of this led to McClure doing what the Phillies have been trying to do all year…surrender.

Remember when Philadelphia was the best team in baseball for about five years running? No tema had more stars than the Phillies with Roy Halladay, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Raul Ibanez and Cole Hamels running the show among others. It was an incredible team to watch, but general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. allowed the team to get old and stale, leading to this mess.

Utley apparently had enough of this bubbling around, leading to him going ballestic on McClure when he came out of the dugout to talk with Francoeur, via Philadelphia Magazine.

At this point, is Amaro Jr. becoming the worst general manager in sports, or has that already happened? It seems he is on a path to oblivion, one brutal loss at a time.
