7 MLB players in line to reach 3,000 hits
6. Robinson Cano — Current Hits: 1,900
When Robinson Cano gets there, he could very well possibly be the last player for a while to hit 3,000 hits. Now, it certainly isn’t a lock that he will finish with 3,000 hits, but he has age on his side. Currently at 1,900 hits, Cano is just 1,100 away from 3,000.
At age 32, Cano is in the midst of a massive contract that he signed with the Seattle Mariners. This year, however, he is struggling at the plate, batting .245 with just two home runs. If he can pick it up a bit in the second half of the season, and finish the year with 2,000 hits, he will have a good chance of reaching the 3,000 milestone.
That would put him at age 33, needing 1,000 hits to get there. If he can become the hitter that the Mariners are paying him to be and become a 160 – 200+ hits a season guy again, he should be able to get there by age 37 or 38 barring injury or anything else.
However, if this season is a sign of things to come and he struggles to find his bat again, then it might be a very long crawl and a stretch to say that he could get there. This could all just be a bad season, much like the one his team is having.
The good thing for Cano is that he doesn’t have to be great the rest of his career to get there, he just has to be decent at the plate. If he does that, he too will join the Mr. 3,000 club when he retires.
He may not be playing worth the $240 million he received from Seattle right now, but that contract will be a big factor in him playing late into his career as it lasts until 2023, when Cano would be 41 years old.
He would only need to average 122 hits a season to hit 3,000, which is something he will far surpass this season during a poor year for him.
